A gyroscope measures orientations and movements in space. Its own rotating dynamics enable relationships in non-static environments to be grasped. This enables orientation and navigation. In a small group, we construct a metaphysical gyroscope for a realistic and critical understanding of rural areas.
Spaces structure actions and perceptions in complex ways. Rural areas also produce their own characteristics through imagination, emotion, practices, ideologies and materiality. How can such rural topologies be captured, understood, and transformed?
To this end, we are forming a small, transdisciplinary learning and working group that goes beyond one-off formats. We each bring our own topics and explore them together. By using our respective empirical material, we will get closer to developing theories and methods for understanding rural areas.
What exactly do we have in mind?
The aim is to establish a self-organising learning and working group. We will establish a framework, but the exact content and structure of the group will be decided together. Svenja and Lukas will prepare the kick-off. As the project progresses, you will not be obliged to participate in the planning, but you will have the opportunity to do so.
Not sure if this is for you?
The project is open to anyone interested in dealing with abstractions and developing their own theories and methods. Whatever your background — philosophy, art, natural sciences, social sciences or professional practice — your contribution is valuable. The more transdisciplinary our small group becomes, the better.
What about funding?
Unfortunately, we don't have much funding for the project yet, and we'd prefer not to be overwhelmed with grant applications at the moment. Therefore, it would be helpful if you could finance your own participation, including time for reading, meetings, travel expenses and accommodation. Then, together, we can consider how to make solidarity possible.
What is the goal?
A gyroscope measures orientations and movements in space.
Firstly, to explore theories and methods for developing a critical understanding of rural areas (and enjoy ourselves in the process). If we develop more concrete ideas during the project, such as publications, texts, artistic works or exhibitions, we can always apply for grants.
Would you like to be part of the working group?
Great! Please send us your introduction by email by 31 October 2025. Who are you? Why are you interested in working at the gyroskop? How can you relate the learning and working group to your other activities? Please send your email to gyroskop@kompost-ensemble.de
Planned so far:
Online kick-off on Thursday, 13 November 2025, 4 p.m.
Further meetings are planned for January (30th and 31st January 2026) in Northern Hesse and in May, August and October 2026 at other places that we will discuss together.
